Why is Route 8 asphalt being removed?
The base of the Route 8 roadway is comprised of concrete sections, and after many years of service, some of the base sections have deteriorated and require replacement.
As part of this rehabilitation project, the existing asphalt surface was removed to inspect the concrete base sections and identify which sections required replacement. Once the inspections were completed, the roadway was resurfaced with new asphalt which you are now driving over to allow for a smoother ride while the repairs are made.
Additionally, each visible concrete slab section is a concrete repair or a location where drainage was upgraded. These exposed areas of concrete will be paved over later in this project and additional safety improvements to the corridor will be added that will provide a smooth driving surface once all of the repairs are completed.
These repairs to the concrete are necessary to ensure the asphalt that is placed over it will last for many years.
